Interviewing Bloggers About Their Blogging Experiences: Batch 1

Monday, January 26, 2015
Hello everyone! I am so excited to share with you this post since I've put a lot of effort putting this together, but it's here now! So anyways, this will only be part 1 out of lots of other parts! Bloggers will be featured in each part with their answers!

Hi there, I'm Amy and I am a lifestyle blogger from Connecticut. I call myself a lifestyle blogger, because I can not stick to one topic. You will find just about everything on my blog from recipes, DIYs, fitness, style posts, comedic posts, and more!

1. What made you decide to start your blog?
I started a blog because I was bored. I had started a job postgrad and I felt like I was missing something. Blogging was a great creative outlet for me, and has been such a fun journey.

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
I was 21

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
I like to see what is trending, and how I could incorporate that into a post I am working on. Mainly my post depends on my mood. My blog really is a representation who I am. So, if I am feeling crafty, you will see that reflected in my weekly posts.

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
No, but I really want to get a schedule! The only consistent post on my blog is my Friday Five.

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
Carly from College Prepster
Kelly from Kelly in the City
Karli Bell from September Farm
Hannah from Words by Hannah Rosalie
Whitney from I Wore Yoga Pants To Work (She doesn't blog as much anymore, but I am still a huge fan. Fingers crossed for a comeback Whitney!)

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
I have read blogs for a couple years now, and have always had a desire to start one. But, I was afraid of what people might think. When my friend from camp Hannah (listed above) started her own blog I was inspired to start my own. I really had to get over my fear of what people thought. Starting a blog was the best decision I have made!

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey?
Feeling uninspired. There are days when it's hard to come up with content or I am so busy with my life that it is hard to sit down and focus on a post.

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?
I haven't had a big achievement yet. My biggest goal I would like to achieve would be being featured in a printed publication. But, I have small achievements that I reach such as when a brand reaches out to me, or when I get a new follower. I am very content with my small achievements for right now until I grow more as a blogger.

1. What made you decide to start your blog?
I started my blog on December 31st, 2013 as a new years resolution. Pinterest was on the rise and a few friends challenged me to post my outfits, too! My blog was originally called The Darling Prepster and was solely a personal style blog during it's first few months. Then I started to really dig into the world of blogging and found that I enjoy writing about a lot of various subjects. After a big rebrand, The Darling Daily was born! I now write about fashion, beauty, travel, and really anything!

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
I was 21.

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
In 2015, I'm trying to share more stories and more personality. That means, I'm turing to a lot of the experiences I've had in my life to serve as inspiration for posts!

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
I used to before I moved to Europe and I need to get back into it! With all the traveling that I was doing, it was very difficult to find adequate wifi and time to write posts. Instead of writing, I focused on site seeing and my photography. Now that I'm not traveling as much, I'm starting to write out those travel posts.

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
It changes on a daily basis, haha! Since I started traveling, I've started to read more and more travel and expat blogs including: World of Wanderlust, Girl vs. Globe, The Rachael Way, and Welcome to Germerica

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
My friends really inspired me to begin my blog.

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey?
Traveling! I love traveling but it made blogging very difficult. my blog took a backseat and since I wasn't posting as frequently, my stats and readership took a huge fall. Now I'm focusing on recovering my blog and hopefully getting it back on track!

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?
Purchasing my one way ticket to Italy with money I made from blogging!

My blog is called The Pace "Keeping up with the world's and setting my own"
About me & The Pace: My name is Tatum, and I blog about what interests me. Right now, that includes my semester abroad in Rome, style, and health and fitness. Keep up with me on Instagram (@tatumerinmurray).

1. What made you decide to start your blog?
I have been reading blogs for years, and one day this past July, thought to myself...Why can't I do that too? So I started drafted posts, played around with layouts, and ta-da...The Pace was born!

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
I started The Pace in July of 2014. I was 20 years old.

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
I get really inspired by other bloggers. I read all types of blogs--super successful style bloggers with millions of followers, health and fitness blogs, blogs that concentrate on recipes, and blogs of other college girls like me! Each inspires me in a different way to create quality posts about what I am passionate about. Instagram is also a big inspiration to me. I follow so many amazing accounts!!

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
I am a college student, so my schedule changes a lot as I take on new classes, go through finals week (ahh!), go on break, etc.. Sometimes I try to stick to a schedule, but other times, I just post when I can.

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
I have so many favorite bloggers! My favorite has to be my cousin, Nichole Ciotti. She inspired me to start blogging  in the first place and her and her boyfriend, Brian, have been so helpful to me throughout this entire process. Her blog, Vanilla Extract (vanillaextract.me) is AMAZING! I also love Taylor Morgan at Little Blonde Book, Jacy Overstreet at Love Lenore, and laurenconrad.com.

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
Other bloggers inspired me to start blogging, especially my cousin, Nichole, from Vanilla Extract (vanillaextract.me).

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey?
Getting over my camera shyness!! I have always been a performer, but never a model! At first, I felt pretty silly having my boyfriend, mom, and dad taking photos of me, but after a while, it started feeling more normal. It's never easy when other people are around, but I just gotta get in the zone and think about how amazing the photos will be!

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?
The posts I created after my cousin and her boyfriend gave me a DSLR camera. The camera made such a difference in the photos, and better photos inspired me to write a better post too! I feel like the camera took The Pace to a whole new level!

Everyday Selene is a lifestyle, happiness & design blog that covers topics such as positive living, photography, playlists, fashion, interior design, recipes, DIY's, How to's, tips, advice, graphic design, blogging, and lots of other things. It is mostly a nice place to stop by, grab a cup of coffee, read  & chat, and make friends!

1. What made you decide to start your blog? I actually started off with a fansite dedicated to an actor I truly loved. But I got so involved into blog design and writing, that I felt I had to do something more personal. I had many blogs - that do not longer exist - until I found which kind of blog I wanted to have and work harder on it.

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
When I decided I wanted to blog I was about 13 or 14 years-old.

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
I have many sources: an idea I had, Pinterest, Tumblr, We Heart It, other bloggers...the options are endless!

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
I'm working on scheduling my posts for this year, and so far I only have 1 schedule post. I try to post when I know that my audience is around and not at work/school.
5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
I have quite many! But the first I can think of are: Melyssa Griffin (The Nectar Collective), Dana Fox (The Wonder Forest), Bri Emery (Design Love Fest), Jenny and Savanna (Maiedae), Marianna (Mariannan) and Zoe Sugg (Zoella).

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
I loved the idea of being able to have my own space on the internet. I wanted to inspire people the way other bloggers inspire me, and to spread happiness and positivity through words and pictures.

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey?
Ugh...So many things!. I think the hardest one - and it is still present in everyday of my life; is trying to build a community (a.k.a reaching readers, building an audience). Sometimes I feel like they don't truly think I honestly want to chat with them if there is anything they like that I posted, and it is hard to show them that I am being real when I say so. And besides that, probably not running out of posts ideas.

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?
It was probably this week, when I posted my first design of a blogger planner and a lovely reader said she was going to print it and try to stick with it. Sometimes people thinks that a comment is meanless, but for a blogger working truly hard on connecting with her readers is the reason to be happy for a day (or more!)
My blog is Falling From Grace, a lifestyle blog and a place for me to host my thoughts and interests in one place. I like to write about books, movies, culture, pop culture, weird stuff, and anything that's on my mind.

1. What made you decide to start your blog? I joined a magazine at school and never realized how much I loved writing for the web, but once April rolled around and I wasn't writing anymore because the semester was over I wanted a place I could keep writing. I also wanted to have a personal website where I could put all my writing in one place, and to put on my resume.

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
I was 19. I'm 20 now.

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
I'll be having a conversation with my friends or notice something that's happening in public discourse - whether it's something in pop culture or just something I've noticed that's prevalent in our interactions with other people - and something will make me want to explore that more. A lot of the time I write about something to help me understand it better or because I think it's something important that other people should be aware of.

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
I just make sure to post at least once a week.

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
Kathleen Grey's fashion blog, When Grey Skies Are You. Arielle Witter's, Ok, Arielle. Meg from Half and Half. Elaina Hundley, of Her Notebooks & Coffee

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
Starting a blog was something that I wanted to do for a really long time and then one day I finally did.

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey?
In the beginning it was really hard to keep finding something to write about regularly, and to keep myself motivated to write. Those things get easier with time.

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?
A couple of my friends who are great writers told me that they were inspired by me to start their own blog. That was definitely the best. I was so happy to hear that someone else wanted to blog because they saw someone else could do it (especially because I don't even consider myself a spectacular blogger!) I've loved watching their blogs grow.

I'm Noor Unnahar, 17 years old college freshmen from Karachi, Pakistan. My major is commerce and business studies. I write + take so many photos and laugh too much. Tea and pizza are my fuel.
I started Noor's Place to write about my life and things I love and it turned out more than that. Now, I write about my college life, life in Pakistan , creativity and often, poetry.

1. What made you decide to start your blog?
Back in 2012, I wanted to make a creative outlet for my writing and love for social media. I didn't know much about blogging so I gave it a shot and made a casual blogger blog that turned out to be the most fun activity for me.

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
I was 15 years old. A freshie, haha!

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
Photos. I can't write a post without a pretty photo. Even when I can't find a pretty photo, I will pull Photoshop on and make a pretty graphic to put on the post page before I start writing.

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
I keep a schedule , written on my notepad. I am not the most organized person right now but it really helps gathering my plans for upcoming posts. Writing down makes it easy to remember. I don't use the automatic scheduling program since I write my post and publish it right away.

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
I love Whitney Blake (she's a creative entrepreneur) , Areeba of I Have a Messy Bun,  Marla of A Weekend Crossing (her photos are breathtakingly beautiful)

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
I started it very randomly. I used to have a private blog on a web community Piczo but that website was shutting down and I needed another place to write on.

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey?
Time management. I often find myself completely tangled up with studies, life and blogging. It's so hard to manage all at once. But then I tell myself about all the successful people who achieve everything on their own, by hard work. Each and every person inspire me to keep it up.

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?
A government official once came to my college and I talked to him about my blog + blog designing. I didn't have a single idea he actually listened it with interest and when I emailed him, he told me he read my blog and is looking forward for more posts. I was beyond excited. It was awesome.

My name is Erica,  the girl behind Girl, Organized! I’m a twenty-something marketing coordinator living in southern Louisiana. I live with my wonderful fiancé and our two adorable cats, Phineas & Neville. While going to college full time, I worked as a personal assistant and other odd jobs. This combined with living in small apartments the last few years, has really polished my organization skills. Girl, Organized helps people and businesses bring order to their lives -- with beauty and humor along the way.

1. What made you decide to start your blog?
I have always been the organized friend, and people kept asking me for advice or help! A few friends kept saying I should start a blog, and I finally caved.

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
I was 24. I had graduated college in the fall semester and while working part time & searching for a job, I found myself with a lot of free time. I finally decided to try out blogging.

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
I always look around my own house, and wonder how I can be more organized, or what I know most people struggle with when organizing. I then just dive right into my project and take a ton of pictures. Pictures really help me write a blog post, I look at the pictures and think about what my thought process was while I was organizing that area.

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
While I may be organized, I don't really have a blog schedule. I have a running list of blog post ideas. I like to have an organizing post at least once a week, and one extra post. My mood changes weekly, so I read through my list of ideas and pick what I feel like writing about that week.

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
One of my favorites has always been Simply, Organized http://www.simplyorganized.me/

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
I remember joking to someone that I wish I could be a professional organizer and they said, that was actually a real job. I went home and googled it, and came across the National Association of Professional Organizer's website. I then went on an hours long surfing binge, and came across other professional organizers and most had blogs. I realized that it they could do this, then I definitely could.

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey?
Learning Wordpress coding. I have a good understanding of HTML & CSS, but the php behind making your own theme or other changes, ugh!

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?
The fact that more than just my family & friends are reading it! I'm also starting to make a little money from it, which is also so great. With blogging, you usually have to put forth some amount of money, and you don't really get that back. I've also met some other really amazing bloggers, and it is such an amazing & supportive community, I love it.

A 20 something blogger from Rochester, NY who studies media management during the day and fashion blogs at night. I’m obsessed with polka dots, motivational quotes, and being classy. My goal is to inspire people to become the best version of themselves they can be through my writing.

1. What made you decide to start your blog? I
found myself bored from my classes in college as a business major and wanted to do something creative in my free time so I started a blog. I wanted a place where I could express my thoughts involving fashion, beauty, and anything else that comes to mind so what better place than with my own little corner of the internet?

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog? 19

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
A lot of inspiration comes from my everyday life or interesting pictures that I find on Pinterest and Instagram.

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
I don't have a schedule because I feel that my best work is when I'm inspired. Instead I aim to write at least 15 posts every month.

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
So many! A few of my favorites are Suburban Faux-Pas, Fash Boulevard, and Convey the Moment.

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
Aside from the many amazing bloggers out there, I was also inspired by my love for fashion and writing. Where I live fashion is nonexistent and there aren't many bloggers out here either so I was inspired to change that.

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey? Having to constantly stay motivated to blog and time management. As a college student, it's hard to juggle blogging on top of the many other things that you have to do. Then when you find yourself having some free time to blog, you realize that you don't have any motivation to do it cause you're so exhausted and drained. Through these challenges, I've learned to better manage my time and always remind myself of why I actually blog. I've realized that as long as I have a passion for blogging, then these challenges don't matter much at the end.

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience? Meeting a designer at a fashion show and having them take a look at my blog. A few weeks later, I get an email saying that they want me to be a stylist at their next photoshoot! It was my first time working in fashion and it made me realize that blogging can lead to many opportunities that I didn't think was possible.

“Kayla in the City” was started as a way to share my life as a theater student at NYU and my attempt to lead a happier, healthier life in Manhattan.

Now it’s a few years later and I’ve turned my passion into a fitness career post-college. I love trying out new recipes (up until recently I was terrified of my kitchen) and creating fun new workouts. This blogs documents my life here in Manhattan as I navigate life post college.

1. What made you decide to start your blog?
I've always had a blog of some sort... back in the day I was all about live journal and xanga (probably aging myself here). Throughout college I had a few different blogs, such as one devoted to reviewing broadway shows I saw. I got really hooked on healthy living blogs though during fall of my senior year of college and thought I have a lot of advice and things to say, why not give it a shot.

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
I started Kayla in the City when I was 21.

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
I always think about my friends who secretly read my blog and then tell me how much they loved a certain post. I love when I run into random people from high school that I haven't seen in 6 years and they say my blog has inspired them to start cooking or working out. It's the best feeling in the world and I think of those type of interactions whenever I'm writing.

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
As of right now I don't.

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
My own fitness journey. I don't have some before or after picture like many fitness bloggers-- I've always been a petite girl and am still a petite girl (thanks for the great genes, parents!) but I definitely completely changed my life through fitness. I used to be this incredibly anxious, uptight person and was constantly a ball of stress. I'm 100% certain that my fitness regiment has completely transformed my life and I wanted to share that journey with other people to encourage them to start working out too.

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your blogging journey?
There's a few things-- 1. Writer's block. It happens and I just have no idea what to write about. 2. Caring about what other people think. I didn't post my blog on my own personal Facebook for awhile-- blogging can sometimes come with this weird stigma for whatever reason. Even my mom wasn't aware that I had this growing fitness blog until my brother's girlfriend mentioned it. Now I'm a lot less embarrassed by it-- because I honestly shouldn't be embarrassed. I'm really proud of the space I've created on the internet.

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?

Most exciting moment as a blogger has to be a tie between two different instances. The first is when I got to visit the Reebok HQ in Massachusetts for a focus group with a handful of other bloggers. I just kept pinching myself that this REALLY happened.

Number 2 is when I was introduced as one of the top 100 bloggers in NYC as a press event. I think my jaw dropped-- after the event I called my mom right away freaking out about how I'm apparently one of the top bloggers in Manhattan (guys, NYC is HUGE and there's a lot of bloggers! )

Payton Sartain

1. What made you decide to start your blog?
 - I decided to start my blog when I realized that I wanted to eventually move out to Los Angeles for an internship in Fashion. I wanted to have a running resume for employers to look at, as well as a way to show companies that I knew what I was talking about when it comes to style & fashion and that I have a passion for it. Since then, I have gotten the internship of my dreams, fallen in LOVE with blogging, and have re-branded to a totally new site with the same, original vibes.

2. How old were you when you decided to start your blog?
 - 20 years old.

3. What inspires you the most whenever you make a blog post?
 - I am inspired by magazines and Pinterest the most, honestly. I love to sit down & browse the CRAZY amount of info right at your fingertips when it comes to Pinterest… I think its so cool how easily we can access such a wealth of knowledge! I like to learn, learn, learn, and then try out recipes, style advice, wellness tips, and workouts (blah, blah, blah) for myself, and if I fall in love, I'll blog about them!

4. Do you have a schedule on publishing your blog posts? If so, when?
  -  I'm actually so bad about scheduling my posts, and its something that I'm working to plan out right now, as my blog gets bigger and better. I've noticed that posting on weekdays is efficient and smart, but also posting on Sunday evening has been a huge hit (esp. pinning/ instagramming about posts at this time).

5. Who are your favorite bloggers?
   - I really, really love Lauryn Evarts of www.TheSkinnyConfidential.com, and of course, the online magazine www.HauteMessMag.com, which is edited by my blog-friend, (<< sooooo fun to have these) Tiffany Wood. I'm a contributor for this site, too, so you have to go check it out!

6. Who or what inspired you to start your very own blog?
   - My mother was actually really into me starting a blog, and she is so supportive to this day. I also started it to be able to advance my knowledge in the subjects that I blog about and to give me a creative outlet to channel my energy into.

7. What was the hardest thing that you have come across in your
blogging journey?
  - The toughest thing that I have encountered in my blogging journey so far is dealing with people who just don't "get it." Where I'm from, in Texas, blogging isn't very popular and people don't really understand that it can turn into a full-time job if you do it right. Basically, I've been given a lot of crap (to my face and behind my back) for being a blogger. It hasn't discouraged me or turned me away from blogging, because you can't let people do that to you. You just have to 100% own it, and if you love it, say a big, fat "whatever" to people who try to frame what you're doing with your life as 'weird' or 'dumb.' They can do their thing, and I'll do mine, ya know??? In the end, I've become pretty successful/grown so much as a blogger, locked down a wonderful internship, learned SO much about myself & what I'm capable of, and had a really good time doing it!

8. What was your greatest achievement in your blogging experience?
 - Landing my internship with the clothing brand, For Love & Lemons (and being featured on their Instagram a few times!!), and moving out to Los Angeles to pursue it!

Alright, hope you enjoyed these interviews and I hope that they have inspired you too! Stay tuned for the next batch of interviews!

What's Secretly Sabotaging Your Metabolism? (Guest Post By Danai)

Tuesday, January 20, 2015
A little something about the writer:

Danai is a lifestyle blogger, freelance writer, children's book author, actress, and petite model (whew!) living and working in NYC. When she's not juggling her crazy schedule or snarking on her blog, she loves to travel, bake, read, and cover things in glitter.

You eat right, you exercise, you check all the boxes and try to take care of your health.

So why do you still feel off sometimes? Why do you still have lagging energy levels or a sometimes sluggish temperament.

Read on for some surprising ways that you may be unknowingly sabotaging your metabolism!

1) Calcium Deficiency

Here's yet another reason to drink your milk - not only is calcium important for bone health, but studies also suggest that it's important for metabolic health!

Calcium deficiency can raise your risk of developing metabolic syndrome, so be sure that you're drinking milk, eating yogurt, or (if you're vegan) covering your bases with plenty of tofu, calcium fortified soymilk products and cereals, and calcium-rich greens!

2) Iron Deficiency

Vegetarians are often fairly health conscious, relative to the general population, and a vegetarian diet can be very healthy. However, vegetarian diets can raise the risk of iron deficiency, especially for women.

Iron is really important and it makes sense that being iron deficient isn't good for you. But did you know that iron deficiency can turn on genes in your liver and muscles that promote fat storage and cause abnormally elevated blood sugar?

To reduce your risk of developing metabolic syndrome, be sure to check your iron levels regularly - especially if you're a menstruating vegetarian. If you're having difficulty maintaining a healthy weight, despite eating right and exercising, and you feel fatigued, you definitely want to get some (easy) lab tests right away to see if low iron levels are to blame!

3) Irregular Sleep

You knew that not getting enough sleep wasn't doing you any favors - but did you know that it's not only how much you sleep, but when you sleep that matters?

I'm not talking about 11pm versus midnight. What seems to be important is how consistent you are about your bedtime. If you're going to bed erratically - sometimes at 10pm, sometimes at 1am, sometimes at 9:30pm, and sometimes at 3am - your risk of metabolic damage is still elevated, even if you're getting enough sleep.

Going to bed crazy late (or crazy early) now and then won't hurt you, but try to aim to go to bed within the same one hour window most nights!

Where you surprised by any of these?

Do any of these apply to you?

Do you have any to add?
